You are not crazy to want a mesh. You are about to spend $680 solving the wrong problem. Behind a 300 Mbps internet plan, a flagship Wi-Fi 7 pair like the eero Max 7 delivers exactly the same internet speed as a mesh that costs a quarter as much, because your plan, not your router, is the ceiling. Your dead corner is a placement problem and a band problem, not a Wi-Fi 7 problem. Buy a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E two-pack for a few hundred dollars, get your modem out of the sink cabinet, and keep the rest of the money.
We ran the question past three separately trained models: Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 5, Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro, and Perplexity's Sonar Pro. They agreed on the headline in the first minute, and then argued, usefully, about the one thing internet threads always get wrong here.
Here is what you gave us: a 1,900 square foot rental, one coax outlet in the whole house (under the kitchen sink, behind granite, in a corner), no Ethernet anywhere, no way to run cable, a weak-signal dead spot in the far corner, a 300 Mbps plan, and the stated goal of coverage, not speed. You are weighing a pair of eero Max 7 units at about $680.
Two things we assumed, and label as assumptions: that your 300 Mbps is the internet plan speed and you have no heavy local traffic between your own devices (no network drive, no local media server), and that you have no near-term plan to jump to gigabit internet. If either is false, the answer changes, and we say exactly where.
We worked the numbers before reading a word the models wrote. Here is the part that decides it.
Your internet plan is a hard 300 Mbps ceiling on everything coming from the outside world. A modern mesh's link speed to a device in a normal room clears that ceiling several times over, at every tier:

Every tier already saturates your plan. The Wi-Fi 7 pair's multi-gigabit headroom is real, and behind a 300 Mbps line you cannot spend a single megabit of it on browsing, streaming, or downloads. The bottleneck moved to your ISP the moment the router got faster than 300 Mbps, which happened two tiers below the Max 7.
Prices are approximate and worth checking the day you buy. One thing worth flagging: a new eero Max 7 two-pack normally lists well over $1,000, so $680 for "a pair" is either a sale, an open-box unit, or actually a different eero tier. eero sells three Wi-Fi 7 products with confusingly close names, and the eero 7, eero Pro 7, and eero Max 7 are not the same thing. Confirm which one is in your cart.
Coverage is set by three things, and the Wi-Fi generation is not one of them: how strong a signal leaves your first node, how far and through how many walls it has to travel, and how good the link is between your two nodes. A router sealed under a sink, behind granite and plumbing, is broadcasting from inside a bunker. No amount of "7" fixes a signal that is choked before it clears the cabinet door.
The 6 GHz band that Wi-Fi 7 leans on for its headline speeds travels worse through walls than the older 5 GHz band, not better. Higher frequency, more attenuation. So the expensive part of the expensive router is the part least able to reach your far corner.
The models agreed on the headline at once. Then Gemini and Sonar went a round on MoCA, the trick that turns a coax line into a wired link between nodes, and the disagreement was the useful part.
Sonar pushed first: one visible coax jack does not prove the in-wall coax is a dead end, so do not declare MoCA impossible without checking. Fair caution. Claude then reframed the argument onto the variable that actually decides it. MoCA needs a coax termination at each node, one at the router and one at the far node. You have exactly one jack in the house. Even if the in-wall coax is one continuous, live run, there is no second place to plug the far adapter in, so MoCA is out. Not because the wiring is broken, but because a second jack does not exist. Gemini and Sonar both moved to that framing. Whether the coax was continuous turned out to be the wrong question.
A single model would have gotten you the headline. It took three to get you the fix.
Claude Sonnet 5, going first, nailed the bottleneck math and was the one who cut the MoCA argument down to the fact that mattered. Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro earned its seat twice. It named the real culprit that everyone else, including our own first-pass notes, had walked past: the modem trapped under the sink, the thing no router upgrade can fix. Then, in the second round, it caught the mistake the obvious cheap answer would have walked you into. "Just buy a cheap Wi-Fi 6 mesh" is a trap here, because the cheapest meshes are dual-band, and with your backhaul forced to run wirelessly, a dual-band mesh has to share its 5 GHz lane between talking to your devices and talking to the other node. That can halve the speed at the far corner, the exact corner you are trying to fix. The right answer is not "cheap." It is "tri-band," which is a specific and different thing. Perplexity's Sonar Pro, the search-grounded seat, kept everyone honest on pricing and wrote the plainest version of the weekend plan.
That is what the council added. Not the arithmetic, which any of them could do, but the two catches that turn a correct-but-useless "don't overspend" into an actual fix.
We handed the council the complication a renter would actually hit: suppose the coax is under the sink because your internet arrives on it, so the modem is tethered to that corner. That settled MoCA for good, and it sharpened the fix instead of breaking it. The modem is tied to the jack, not to the inside of the cabinet. A $15 length of coax cable, run along the baseboards out of the kitchen, moves the modem and your main node into open air in a central room. No drilling, no landlord call, fully rental-safe. That one move will do more for your dead corner than any brand on the shelf.
And the flip condition, the number that would change our answer: if your plan crosses roughly 1 Gbps, or you start moving big files between your own devices, the Wi-Fi 7 headroom stops being wasted and the Max 7 starts to make sense. At 300 Mbps, for coverage, it does not.
Three moves, in order.
Move the modem first. A cheap coax extension out of the sink cabinet into an open, central spot is the highest-value thing you can do, and it runs about $15.
Buy tri-band, not cheapest. A tri-band Wi-Fi 6E two-pack in the low hundreds gives the two nodes their own lane to talk to each other. Confirm the box says tri-band. If the far corner still fights you, a three-pack of the same mid-tier system beats a two-pack of anything pricier, because a stepping-stone node in the middle beats a stronger radio at the end.
Check which eero is actually in your cart before you assume $680 is the price of a Max 7 pair. It usually is not.
